Premier League

The English Premier League is the top division of English football. The name "Premier League" was introduced in 1992 and is considered the highest level of English football. The league consists of 20 teams. The league starts in August and ends in May, with each team playing 38 matches, for a total of 380 matches per season. Most matches are played on Saturdays and Sundays, but a few matches are played during midweek evenings.
Until 1992, the highest division of English football was the First Division; since then, the Premier League has been the highest.[2] The Premier League competition was formed on February 20, 1992, after the First Division clubs decided to break away from the First Division, which was founded in 1888, to benefit from lucrative television rights deals. Since then, the Premier League has become the most watched league in the world and the most profitable football league, with combined club revenues reaching $1.93 billion in the 2007-08 season. It also ranks first in UEFA's rankings of European league performances over the past five years, ahead of La Liga and Serie A.
Since the current league format began in 1992, only seven of the 50 clubs competing in the Premier League have won the title: Manchester United (13 titles), Manchester City (8 titles), Chelsea (5 titles), Arsenal (3 titles), Blackburn Rovers (1 title), Leicester City (1 title), and Liverpool (1 title). The current defending champion is Manchester City.
The Premier League was formed on February 20, 1992, replacing the English Football League during the 1992-93 season. This historic move marked a change in the 104-year-old league format, altering its four-tier league structure. This move was intended to strengthen football in England after the mid-1980s, which suffered from weak financial resources and the problems of English football hooligans.
The first meeting to sign the league's charter took place on July 17, 1991. After agreeing to establish the league, work began on finding sponsors for the league and issuing a special television broadcast license. On May 27, 1992, the Premier League was announced as a company operating in cooperation with the English Football Association.
